Observation details
First seen at 5:45 pm by Rick as it soared to the east above the tree canopy at about the height of the hawk tower, then goodish views by all as it circled and flew away southeast. Soared with shallow dihedral. Distinguished from SWHA at the time primarily by wing shape (bulging secondaries & less pointed tips gave a more typically Buteo appearance) and by underwing pattern (contrasting whitish patches at base of outer primaries). Underparts creamy, seemingly without any streaking. Undertail not seen clearly but seemed indistinctly barred without an obviously contrasting dark terminal band. The uppertail was plain brown with a rufus tinge. I didn't get a good view of the head. From its plumage, it appears to have been a light-morph eastern juvenile.
