Observation details
4 sightings with one group of three and the other three birds singles. Photos of 2 of these birds. Small shearwater of the Audubon, Black-vented, Galapagos complex; flying low over waves with quick wingbeats separated by short glides. eBird says Galapagos is more expected. I have seen multiple Black-vented on two separate trips to Monterey Bay, CA. I compared these birds with the photos that I took on those trips; very similar. So, the birds that I saw and photographed this day looked more Black-vented with black vents, smudged line between back/nape color and throat/breast. Guides and on-line photos suggest a cleaner break between the nape and throat. eBird reviewer: I will post better photos when I return home from vacation. Please review these and provide feedback on ID. I have never seen Galapagos Shearwater and as stated above have seen multiple Black-vented on 2 pelagic trips in Monterey Bay, CA....so not an expert but familiar with the species.
